![]() Yet today, it is astronomy which describes the origin and fate of the universe, the nature of other worlds, and the inner workings of stars like the sun. What is the difference between these terms, and why do people who do astronomy react so strongly to astrology?Īccording to Brian, “astrology” comes from the Greek roots astro (star) and logos, which technically means “word,” but has strong connotations of bringing order to chaos. Astronomy, on the other hand, utilizes the Greek word nomos, which suggests a body of laws. Both words, then, might beautifully describe the science-the how-of the stars and other celestial bodies. “That’s part of your astrology class, isn’t it?” my colleague Brian asks in mock seriousness. As an English teacher and aficionado of etymology, he obviously understands what he’s saying-he just wants to get my goat-but the slip is nevertheless indicative of a certain tension.
